Education
STA NOW OFFERING FULL-TIME EDUCATION TO ACADEMY PLAYERS
STA have formed a unique and exciting partnership with Sotogrande International School. From September 2011, our players aged 12-18 will be offered a bespoke academic programme, so they can combine their tennis programmes with full-time education.
Sotogrande International School is a leading International Baccalaureate school on the Costa Del Sol. Based in Sotogrande, just a 10 minute drive from our courts, the educational syllabus is taught in English and follows the American schooling system :
Grades 7-9 for ages 12 – 14
MYP Certificate (equivalent to GCSE’s) for ages 14 – 16
American High School Diploma (equivalent of A-levels) for ages 16-18
Together, through an individualised and tailor-made programme, STA and SIS aim to produce players who are well-rounded, focused, mentally strong and committed to both their sport and academics, and have the opportunity to go on to American or British Universities.
Teaching will be a combination of face to face classes at SIS, combined with online tasks that the students must undertake. Core subjects to be taught include Maths, English, Science, Humanities, Spanish or another language.
Each student-athlete will....
Attend school daily in the mornings, allowing their individual tennis programme to be followed in the afternoons
Have their own education coach who will support and help prepare for exams as well as ensure academic work is kept to the level and standard required.
Be able to access online learning support and facilities whilst at tournaments
Have their own tennis coach who will be responsible and accountable for their players development
Be given the latest TOEFL and/or SAT testing/Tutoring at SIS School if required.
Pastoral-care boarding options are also available in conjunction with SIS. SotoTennis Academy will also be offering the option of online learning with the support of local tutors, which will follow the British syllabus system of GCSE’s and A-levels.
University scholarships
The programme at SIS qualifies suitable students for further education and potentially a sports scholarship to a US college which is a recognised stepping stone towards being a top professional player.
At STA we have strong relationships with many leading colleges and a track record of placing players at top colleges around the US and UK. We help throughout the recruitment and reviewing processes, tailoring each players programme to the eligibility requirements of the NCAA / NJCAA and ensuring each players finds their own ‘best’ university.
The syllabus we have created with SIS ensures the optimum progress of the individual with the widest options for the future. Our aim is for the individuals training with us to become self-sufficient and grow in their own way whilst being part of a team, and that belief continues in our aim to develop strong, mature, young people who are ready for life and the many options available to them.
The average age for a top 100 player on the ATP tour is now 27, and the top 100 WTA players have an average age of 25. Staying in education to the age of 18 and beyond widens options and allows players to make educated decisions about their future with our expert advice and support. For some, it will be the correct decision to go straight onto the Pro Tour. For others, a more realistic route to the top may involve earning a scholarship to a US college. We have the resources and dedication to support whatever pathway is chosen.
